Is Sakara Sustainable?

Sakara does have a lot of sustainable practices in place which I appreciate. I definitely think they are one of the more ethical and sustainable meal subscription services out there.

Zero Waste Initiative

Their Zero Waste Initiative strives to keep food waste below 1%. They do this through strategic planning and buying of ingredients, sourcing imperfect produce, composting, and donating unused ingredients.

Sakara ingredients that don’t end up in meals are donated or composted through partners, including City HarvestRoho Compost and Wilenta Feed.

Organic Meal Delivery Service

It is wonderful that Sakara prioritizes organic ingredients as this can be hard to find in a meal delivery service.

Sakara sources organic produce and supports farmers with responsible farming practices. These choices help to reduce pesticide and insecticide usage in the food system.

I personally prioritize purchasing organic foods, so finding a meal delivery service that values this has been a big win!

Sustainable Packaging

While finding eco-friendly packaging for meal delivery can be challenging, Sakara is heading in the right direction! I appreciated that the booklet in the box had an entire section on how to responsibly dispose of each different part of the packaging.

  • They use cardboard boxes made from post-consumer recycled materials that are curbside recyclable.

  • They use #1 PET plastic meal containers because they are the most easily recycled and commonly accepted recyclable materials nationwide. They're also the best option for keeping Sakara meals safe and fresh in transit. Some of their meal containers are both made from recycled PET and are recyclable. It would definitely be cool to see Sakara swap out a plastic container for compostable or reusable in the future, but I do understand they have to keep their plant-based meals fresh.

    • ALSO these containers are really high quality. For all my sustainability gurus you can definitely wash these out and reuse them a few times before recycling!! That’s what I’ll be doing.

  • The liners inside each box are made from recycled paper and corn starch and are now certified 100% curbside recyclable by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.

  • The meals came with ice packs that had clear instructions on how to empty and recycle.

Overall I think Sakara is moving in the right direction. I think it would be great if we saw more compostable materials instead of plastic for the meal containers.

I do think of the popular online meal delivery services Sakara is one of the most sustainable options given their use of organic ingredients.
