What is Wildgrain?
Wildgrain is a subscription box service that partners with small-batch bakers and pasta makers across the country to provide nutritious artisanal breads, pastas, and pastries.
Founded by Johanna and Ismail, Wildgrain is a company on a mission to replace supermarket breads and pantry staples with food made with cleaner ingredients.
How Does Wildgrain Work?
When setting up their subscription customers can choose between two different types of boxes: mixed box and a bakery box.
The mixed box features an assortment of sourdough bread, pasta, and artisanal pastries. The bakery box features an assortment of sourdough bread, breakfast baked goods, and artisanal pastries. The main difference between the two options is the pasta and breakfast baked goods.
Each month the wildgrain subscription box features a different selection of items allowing for seasonal treats!
Wildgrain boxes arrive within 1-3 days of shipping. They're shipped with eco-friendly insulation and dry ice to ensure the food stays frozen. When customers receive the box they can store the items in the freezer.
Wildgrain items can go from freezer to table within 25 minutes. There is no thawing required which is great. Cooking instructions are on the package of each item.
What is the Wildgrain Box Cost?
The cost of this monthly subscription box is $89 which include free shipping. Customers can also add items to their box for an additional charge. You can use the referral link for $20 off of your first box and free croissants for life.
Where does Wildgrain Deliver?
Wildgrain delivers to the continental United States. They do not deliver to Puerto Rico, Alaska, or Hawaii.
Can I Change the Delivery Date and Frequency of this Subscription Box?
Yes, Wildgrain allows you to set up a delivery frequency that works for you such as monthly, every six weeks, and other options. Customers can also skip, cancel, or change the date of their boxes within their account.
What's in the Wildgrain Box?
Wildgrain boxes feature a range of artisanal bread, high quality pasta, and delicious baked goods. The contents of the box vary from month to month. I received the January Wildgrain mixed box which included:
Plain Sourdough Loaf
Sourdough Spelt Loaf
Cranberry-Pecan Sourdough Loaf
Fresh Fettuccinie
Fresh Tonnarelli
Giant Chocolate Chunk Cookies
Croissant
Can you substitute items and customize your box?
After receiving your first Wildgrain box, you are able to make substitutions on future orders. Wildgrain e-mails customers four days before allowing them to make changes to their subscription or swap out items.
However, customers can only substitute the month's offerings with designated items, so this can still be a bit limiting. Customers can also add items to their order for an additional charge.
What do clean ingredients & healthy bread mean to Wildgrain?
Wildgrain products are made with clean non-GMO ingredients, unbleached flour, and are free from artificial colors. Their clean carbs are also vegetarian and a good source of fiber. Their foods contain no preservatives and are responsibly sourced from small businesses.
Their fresh sourdough bread offers many health benefits such as the fermentation process digesting most of the gluten, lactic acid which helps digest nutrients, and prebiotics which can help with gut biome health.
Are Wildgrain Products Organic?
While Wildgrain doesn't focus on organic, select breads such as their plain sourdough loaf are made with organic ingredients. They do focus on making their products with unbleached flour, non-GMO ingredients, and no artificial colors.
Mixed Wildgrain Box Review
I was gifted a mixed box which included the plain sourdough loaf, sourdough spelt loaf, cranberry pecan sourdough loaf, fresh fettuccini, fresh tonnarelli, giant chocolate chunk cookies, and croissants.
I enjoyed the croissants for breakfast. I made a homemade Alfredo sauce to compliment the fettuccine and this was delicious. For the fresh tonnarelli I added some marinara and fresh basil.
We enjoyed the plain sourdough loaf with chili for dinner. This was a great complimenting side to a cozy meal. The sourdough spelt loaf went great with soup for lunch. And the cranberry pecan loaf was wonderful on its own.
Overall I enjoyed my Wildgrain box. I think it's an easy way to have high-quality bread, pasta, and pastries in your kitchen.
What I Love About Wildgrain
Taste- I was impressed with the taste of the items. Everything tasted fresh and you can tell the items were made with high quality ingredients. The loaves of bread definitely tasted much better than store-bought bread. My two favorite items in the January box were the croissants and the plain sourdough loaf.
No Thawing Required- I love that there is no thawing required. It's great that you can easily take the items out of the freezer and cook them. This makes it simple to have fresh bread with dinner or pastries with breakfast because there is no planning required.
Eco-friendly Insulation- I appreciate that their insulation is compostable and made from corn and the plastic covering it is recyclable.
Cleaner Ingredients- I love that Wildgrain uses cleaner ingredients than traditional supermarket breads.
Giving Back- For each subscription Wildgrain donates six meals to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
What I Don't Like About Wildgrain
Damaged Packaging: Unfortunately part of my box came with damaged packaging. The cookie packaging was completely open and the cookies were on top of the dry ice. I had to throw the chocolate chip cookies away and was unable to try them due to the dry ice exposure. When I inquired about the damaged packaging I was told that customers would typically receive a refund for the damaged item as they are unable to ship individual items. However, since my box was sent for review I was not able to try the cookies.
Limited Substitutions: From trying a couple Wildgrain boxes I've sincerely enjoyed the croissants and chocolate croissants the best and always try to swap out some of the other items for these. However, when I go to substitute items before my next delivery these aren't always available to swap for. It seems certain items are offered as add ons and not substitutions which can make customization a bit limiting.
Will I Subscribe to Wildgrain's Subscription Box?
Yes, I currently am a subscriber. However, due to the price point and the amount of food in the box, I have set my delivery frequency to every six weeks instead of receiving a monthly box.
As a household of two people we wouldn't be able to finish a full box within a month, so every six weeks works better for us. In my other box I have been able to try the brioche rolls, English muffins, chocolate croissants, and slow fermented olive oil ciabatta bread.
