Is plus size sustainable fashion the right term?

While a lot of people use the term plus size clothing, I personally am not a fan of this phrase because it seems to separate these sizes as "the other." XL and up are sizes too!

The reality is people wear a variety of sizes and the clothing industry shouldn't shame people based on their size or make it more difficult for XL+ to find clothes. The traditional S-L size standard tends to project what a body “should be” and is exclusive.

What about petite sizes in the eco-fashion movement?

Honestly, the ethical & eco-friendly fashion movement is lacking in petite sizes too. There is a lot of room for growth & improvement in including smaller sizes as well.

Why does ethical fashion need to be more size inclusive?

Ethical & sustainable fashion should not be exclusive based on your size. We want all consumers to be part of the fashion revolution for change. This means more brands need to hop on the size inclusivity train & offer sizes for petite & XL+ sized individuals.

All in all, we have some brands moving in the right direction to be more inclusive, but there is still a lot to be done! If one of your favorite ethical brands doesn’t offer sizes beyond S-L, I encourage you to reach out to them & request expanding their sizes to include petite & XL+.

How ethical & sustainable clothing brands be better?

Along with expanding their size ranges, I believe it’s incredibly important to use size inclusive & diverse models. By showing customers what the clothing looks like on different body types this creates a more inclusive movement.

Too often I notice that even if a brand offers sizes beyond L, they don’t always display their clothing on body types with people who have curves.

We even see ethical fashion industry leaders such as Eileen Fisher who has size inclusive petite & plus size clothing lines, but lacks plus size models on their website.

I think it’d be great to see more variety in the models shown in pictures, so that women are able to visualize themselves in the garment. This simple step would make sustainable fashion movement more inclusive.
