Can Baking Sheets Be Toxic?

Most baking sheets on the market are either aluminum or are metal with a non-stick coating and each comes with its own set of problems.

The nonstick coating on baking sheets is made from a synthetic fluoropolymer called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), more commonly known as Teflon.

A study shows that a single scratch on the coating can release around 2,300,000 microplastics and nanoplastics that could potentially find their way into food.

PTFE falls under per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), a group of “forever chemicals” that don’t break down in the environment.

Instead, they end up contaminating soil and water and building up in the bodies of living creatures.

Exposure to PFAS has been linked to a variety of health effects, including ulcerative colitis, diagnosed high cholesterol, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Besides leaching into foods, the chemical coating can sometimes melt or release toxic fumes when heated up above 500°F (260°C). Inhaling these fumes may lead to polymer fume fever, also known as the Teflon flu.

They're non-toxic and won’t leech anything into your food, as well as non-porous, so it won’t absorb food odors, food flavors or food stains.

Like all Pyrex baking dishes, this cooking sheet oven is safe up to 450°F, and works for lots of recipes, both sweet and savory.

You can put it right into a preheated oven, and even use metal utensils on it without worrying about scratching (because it is not coated).

Other Less Toxic Options

Our list above featured non-toxic baking sheets, but here are a few more options that might be less toxic than conventional brands found at chain stores. We’ve noted a difference in the materials.
