Upcycle Clothes from Your Closet

Have you ever thought about upcycling a piece of clothing that you already own? Maybe you have an old dress that doesn't fit quite right or has lost its appeal. Instead of tossing it out, why not give it a fresh new look by altering it?

With a little creativity, you can easily transform that old dress into a stylish new addition to your wardrobe. Change the length, cut off the long sleeves, add some embellishments, or even dye it a different color with things around the house such as avocado pits.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to upcycling clothing.

Not only is it a fun way to get creative, but it's also an eco-friendly way to give new life to your wardrobe. So next time you're about to throw out an old piece of clothing, consider giving it a new lease on life through upcycling.

This could be a fun project to create a unique Earth Day outfit that show off your personal style.

Swap Clothes or Thrift

If you're looking at your closet and still fell like you don't have anything to wear for Earth Day, but don’t want to spend a lot, consider hosting a clothing swap or heading to your local thrift store.

Support Ethical & Sustainable Fashion Brands

If you're looking to purchase something new for your Earth Day outfit, it's important to consider the impact of our choices on the environment and on the people who create the garments we wear.

That's why supporting ethical fashion brands that prioritize sustainability and social responsibility is so crucial. These brands are focused on using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and providing fair wages and working conditions for their workers.

There is a wide variety of clothing from small businesses which is great. Small businesses typically produce in small batches which creates less waste, uses less raw materials, emits less carbon emissions than large companies.

Wear Eco-friendly Materials

If you're planning your Earth Day outfit linen, hemp, and organic cotton are some materials that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Not only do these fabrics have a lower impact on the environment, but they are also comfortable to wear and easy to care for.

  • Organic cotton uses less toxic chemicals which is a positive for the environment, the farmers, and the consumer. Conventional cotton is referred to as one of the dirtiest crops because of the amount of pesticides used.

  • Linen is a plant-based fiber made from flax. Linen is hypoallergenic and a great choice for people looking to wear natural clothing. Linen is a comfortable and durable fabric.

  • Hemp is a durable natural fabric that is gaining popularity in sustainable fabrics. Hemp can be grown almost anywhere, doesn’t need a lot of water, does not deplete the soil of nutrients, and can be sown several times a year.

  • Deadstock fabrics are surplus fabric due to overproduction from the fast fashion industry. Unfortunately, the fast fashion industry has tons of textiles that go to waste. When eco-friendly fashion brands craft clothes with these deadstock fabrics, it reduces the demand of fabrics made with new materials and saves these unwanted fabrics from going to waste.

Choosing clothes made from these materials is not only good for the planet but also good for you as you show your commitment to minimizing your carbon footprint. There are many other sustainable materials to explore too!

We hope this guide helped you create a stylish and sustainable outfit in honor of Earth Day! Good news, outfit repeating is cool and sustainable. So, be sure to save your sustainable outfit for next year too!
